History and Mission

Alverno Clinton Iowa Opening

The Alverno Health Care Facility was the first organization in Clinton, Iowa, dedicated to caring for the community’s elderly population. Originally founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Clinton, Iowa in 1914, the facility was first named Mount Alverno after Saint Francis’ mountain retreat of La Verna near Assisi. By the late 1960s, the Sisters of St. Francis decided to construct a new facility. The building (still in use today) was built at 849 13th Avenue North in Clinton. Licensed for 125 residents, the new building opened on January 21, 1971, and the name was changed to The Alverno Health Care Facility. Over the years, occupancy steadily increased. With the change in health care needs within the community, The Alverno shifted its emphasis from a retirement home to providing complex nursing care. In 2013, ownership was transferred to Trinity Health Senior Communities in Livonia, Michigan. The Alverno continues its mission to provide quality of life and support for the aging and their families. The Alverno became the first senior community in the State of Iowa to achieve the Gold Quality award from the American Health Care Association in 2017. This distinguished honor places The Alverno within an elite group of senior care organizations across the country. Prior to obtaining this achievement, The Alverno obtained the Bronze level in 2003 and the Silver level in 2010.
